Telecom Cooling Design using 12V 4-Wire fans
This telecom cooling application required providing 12 Amps of regulated 12V power from a 36-72V source in a small compact package with maximum component height of less than .875 inches. As a single or dual regulator design was not possible in such a low profile, six individual 2A regulators, one for each fan, were developed to fit into the fan speed control design constraints.
CRI’s registered electronic design and manufacturing facilities have the capability to provide complete custom fan speed control design for telecom cooling applications from prototype to production.

Telecom Cooling – Custom Fan Speed Control Specifications
- Supply voltage: -36 to -72 VDC
- Fans: Six 12 VDC, 1.7A, 4-wire fans
- Six individual “buck” regulators. Fan current is 2A per regulator at 55°C
- Fan speed control based on external PWM signal from separate controller
- Provides fan status based on monitoring fan tach pulses
- Optically isolated logic alarm outputs for single and multiple fan failure
- Both power feeds and individual fans are fused
- Passive in-rush current limiting is provided for fan startup delay for hotplug capability
