How does a stroboscope measure speed?
A stroboscope measures speed by flashing light at an adjustable rate until rotating or reciprocating objects appear frozen. When the flash frequency matches the rotation speed of the object, you can read the RPM directly from the strobe setting.
Is a stroboscope the same as a strobe light?
They use the same basic principle, but a stroboscope is a precision measurement instrument, not a lighting effect. A stroboscope lets you control flash frequency with accuracy and read the result as a measurable value while consumer strobe lights are designed for visual effects.
What is the difference between a stroboscope and a tachometer?
A tachometer measures rotational speed through direct contact or a reflected laser beam and gives you a number. A stroboscope goes further: it lets you visually inspect a rotating component while it’s in motion. You can see surface defects, check belt or blade alignment, and observe mechanical behavior in real time, at speed.
