Every fan controller regulates speed by modulating the power delivered to the motor, though the specific method of modulation depends on the motor type and the controller architecture. For AC fans, speed is typically varied by adjusting the frequency of the supplied voltage via a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or by “chopping” the voltage waveform using Triac/phase control.

In contrast, DC fan regulation involves reducing the DC voltage itself for 2- or 3-wire fans, whereas 4-wire or Electronically Commutated (EC) fans utilize a control signal sent to the motor’s integrated electronics to manage power distribution. Our DC voltage controllers provide a smooth linear voltage rather than Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), an approach that minimizes acoustic and electrical noise while significantly reducing bearing wear. As power decreases, the fan’s RPM scales accordingly, while closed-loop controllers can go a step further by monitoring real-time feedback—such as temperature or pressure—to automatically adjust speeds and maintain optimal system equilibrium.

Yes, with the right control architecture. CRI’s SmartFan® controllers support analog inputs like 0-10V or 4-20mA and digital protocols like Modbus, which allow a building automation system or PLC to command fan speed without anyone touching the unit. CRI’s controls don’t support native Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but remote control through wired signal inputs or serial communication covers the vast majority of OEM industrial and HVAC applications.

A fan alarm is a signal triggered when a fan falls outside its expected operating parameters. Common triggers include running below a minimum RPM, a stall condition, or a full motor failure. In device cooling applications, a missed alarm can mean overheated equipment. CRI’s SmartFan® controls include fan alarm capability to alert a system controller or shut down a process before a thermal event causes damage.

When prioritizing energy efficiency, DC and EC fans are the superior choice, offering the highest efficiency across all operating parameters. If an application is limited to AC fans, the optimal controller depends largely on the intended duty cycle. For systems that typically operate below 70% of full speed, a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) provides the best efficiency, particularly when paired with a 3-phase motor rather than a single-phase motor. However, research indicates that if the system consistently requires speeds above 70%, a triac-based control actually outperforms a VFD in terms of efficiency and closely approaches the performance levels of DC fans at full speed.
