Every fan controller regulates speed by modulating the power delivered to the motor, though the specific method of modulation depends on the motor type and the controller architecture. For AC fans, speed is typically varied by adjusting the frequency of the supplied voltage via a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or by “chopping” the voltage waveform using Triac/phase control.
In contrast, DC fan regulation involves reducing the DC voltage itself for 2- or 3-wire fans, whereas 4-wire or Electronically Commutated (EC) fans utilize a control signal sent to the motor’s integrated electronics to manage power distribution. Our DC voltage controllers provide a smooth linear voltage rather than Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), an approach that minimizes acoustic and electrical noise while significantly reducing bearing wear. As power decreases, the fan’s RPM scales accordingly, while closed-loop controllers can go a step further by monitoring real-time feedback—such as temperature or pressure—to automatically adjust speeds and maintain optimal system equilibrium.
