DC fans are efficient, controllable, and well-suited for variable-speed applications. They respond well to PWM or analog control signals, making them the natural choice for applications that need to modulate airflow based on temperature.

On the downside, they require a DC power source and typically cost more than their AC counterpart.

Yes, and many do. In telecom racks, medical enclosures, and data center hardware, DC fans run around the clock. The variable that matters most is how they’re managed. A fan running at 100% constantly generates more heat and wear than one operating at the appropriate speed for thermal demand. Speed controllers that modulate based on temperature inputs reduce wear, lower acoustic output, and extend the operational life of both the fan and the surrounding system.

A cooling fan controller is a power-electronic control that manages the speed, behavior, and fault response of one or more cooling fans within a system.

Basic controllers handle on/off switching while more sophisticated ones, like CRI’s device cooling controls, respond dynamically to temperature inputs, monitor fan RPM for fault detection, and adjust speed in real time to maintain target thermal conditions.
